While meeting objectives is the essence of management, there are various ways to get there. The ability of a manager to generate commitment in their reports and team is one of the most powerful.

The ability to use coaching as a tool of management is different than the manager becoming a coach. Coaching is a type of conversation based on inquiry and understanding of how the other person is seeing their situation and possibilities. Since the coach, or person acting in that role, naturally sees the situation differently, he or she will also see possibilities the other does not. That is the essence of coaching, the ability to see what the other is blind to and help them consider it in a new way. Once they see their situation from various new perspectives, they can choose an approach that did not occur to them before.

Coaching is not directing, advising, consulting, or even mentoring. It is a highly personalized way of helping others learn through self-discovery.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” equal_height=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1575453801960{padding-top: 85px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0.04) !important;*background-color: rgb(0,0,0) !important;}”][vc_column offset=”vc_col-lg-12 vc_col-md-12″ css=”.vc_custom_1575895990870{padding-bottom: 20px !important;}”][vc_row_inner equal_height=”yes”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1575452782408{padding-bottom: 50px !important;}” offset=”vc_col-lg-6 vc_col-md-6″][dt_icon_text layout=”layout_4″ dt_text_title=”Directing and Coaching” heading_tag=”h3″ dt_text_title_bottom_margin=”15px” dt_text_desc=”A manager, traditionally, tells others what to do and directs his or her teams toward actions. Managers and supervisors traditionally pay attention to their team’s actions and inquire about what rationale is driving the behavior. They often ask logical questions such as “How did this happen?” and do nothing more than request corrective actions. Although this may resolve the problem in the short-term, a different conversation is necessary to produce change and alignment. This is what makes coaching distinct from other leadership tools.

Understanding what a coaching conversation is, when it is appropriate, and how to lead it is one of the most powerful skills you can build. It has many benefits, among them, empowerment of your reports, deeper commitment, clarity of action, self-motivation, lessened resistance, greater teamwork, increased trust, and less stress for you.
